How to Choose the Right Cut of Steak

Checking out all of the gorgeous cuts of red meat in the meat counter can be overwhelming. Should you go with a Rib Eye, or a Tenderloin? What is the difference between a T-Bone and a Porterhouse? We’ve put together this quick guide that might be helpful in choosing the perfect steak for your next steak dinner!

Filet Mignon

A filet mignon (tenderloin) is a very tender cut of beef with very low fat content. It is great when pan seared with butter, garlic and herbs. This cut is a tad on the more expensive side, so it is a great special occasions steak.

Top Sirloin

Top sirloin steaks are typically very affordable, making them a great choice for BBQ’s, parties and large gatherings. This cut is a bit more muscular and it has great flavor when cooked on the grill.

New York Strip Steak

This cut is tender and lean and can be cooked to perfection on the stove or on the grill. Since there is less marbling on a New York Strip than a Rib Eye, it tends to be a bit less expensive, perfect for a mid-week dinner.

Rib Eye

You can’t go wrong when ordering a Rib Eye steak. Rib eyes tend to be a crowd favorite due to the bold flavor from the marbling. Rib Eyes tend to be a bit more expensive than a Top Sirloin or a New York Strip, but they are well worth it.

T-Bone

T-Bone steaks contain two cuts of steak in one – a tenderloin and a strip steak, separated by a t-shaped bone. These thick-cut steaks are perfect for grilling and allow you to have two great flavors in one dinner.

Porterhouse

You might be wondering: what is the difference between a T-Bone and a Porterhouse steak? They are pretty similar! A Porterhouse steak is larger than a T-Bone, and has a larger portion of Tenderloin attached. Porterhouse steaks are larger in appearance and are great for sharing! (or for eating by yourself – we won’t judge you).

Flank Steak

A flank steak is the perfect candidate for some marinade. The marinade will tenderize the steak and provide some great flavor. Flank steak is a thinner cut, making it a great choice for steak salad, tacos, fajitas and more.
